Local acts set for Nithraid 2017
Dumfries’ river festival, Nithraid, returns to the River Nith this weekend and there’s plenty in store for spectators!
Nithraid celebrates the historical link of the Nith being a transport and communications route in times gone by. A number of boats will race up the river, leaving from Carsethorn at 11am and will all be competing for the much coveted first place (and £50 voucher for local restaurant Crumb!) at the finish line on the Whitesands.
Organised by The Stove Network, this year’s event will include a festival village featuring lots of family friendly activities, as well as Vikings, food, and the ceremonial dunking of the Salty Coo.
Local musicians will be providing entertainment on a nautical themed stage throughout the day which has been curated by The Stove’s youth arts group, Blueprint 100. The line-up includes a range of singer-songwriters such as Stoney Broke, Kate Kyle, Taylor Nelson and Colin James during the day, and bassist and composer Stuart MacPherson and jazz pianist and composer Fraser Clark in the evening.
We spoke to Euan Macrory, a member of Blueprint 100, who helped put together the musical line-up for the event. He told us, “I wanted Nithraid to be an opportunity to showcase some of the amazing talent that comes through The Stove. The acts this year have been involved with The Stove in numerous different ways, from involvement within a project hosted over the past year to regular attendance at Brave New Words or the Under 18s Acoustic Afternoon. We also have Stoney Broke opening up the stage this year. I’m a big fan of Stoney Broke personally and I wanted to have him opening the stage because of the energy he brings to the stage with him in addition to his catchy hooks that will be stuck in your head.“
The event takes place at Mill Green (known locally as the Deer Park, near the Robert Burns Centre) on the banks of the River Nith on Saturday 9th September 2017. Organisers are still accepting last minute entries to the race – if you would like to compete you can get more information and complete the entry form here.
